In Zaheer Khan, Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli get a left-handed complement

The appointment of Zaheer Khan as the Indian team’s bowling coach could be a surprise for many, but could turn out to be an inspired selection. One of the craftiest pacers the country has ever produced, Zaheer has been active in the IPL till a couple of months ago. Almost the entire crew of present Indian bowlers — from Mohd Shami to Umesh Yadav and even some of the spinners — have approached him for counsel, and have returned enriched, often with a different perspective. While Zaheer might come across as a little aloof off the field and in the way he speaks, he is involved and articulate, even funny, in the dressing room. He was to several youngsters, a friend, philosopher and a guide, whose door could be knocked at any time of the night. So much so that MS Dhoni once called him the “Sachin of bowling”.
A patient listener, Zaheer’s contemporaries and younger peers would readily confide in him. During the India’s victorious tour to England in 2007, almost single-handedly won by Zaheer and his pace-bowling colleagues, both RP Singh and S Sreesanth benefitted considerably from his advice and tactical awareness. “Of all the bowlers I have bowled with and spoken to, I haven’t seen anyone like him who has the ability to understand another player’s psyche like Zaheer,” RP Singh once said.
Though he never captained his country, Zaheer was more or less the de facto bowling captain-cum-coach of the team in the last phase of his international career. A perpetually chirping Zaheer at mid-off/mid-on was a familiar sight. Almost after every delivery, he would rush to the bowler, whisper something and rush back to his spot.
He has traits that bode well for his fresh assignment – the innate knowledge and understanding of his craft, the natural aggression and passion, the shrewdness and guile, and most importantly, his ability to connect with modern-day cricketers and their multifarious demands.
There aren’t too many coaches around, who have profoundly understood the dynamics of all three formats as Zaheer. There surely isn’t anybody who has played as many T20 matches as him. He has not only kept a keen eye on developments, but has evolved with them too. Just like his bowling, wherein he compensated for the lack of pace with clever use of cutters, slower balls and the knuckle ball as his career drifted into the twilight. He thus brings a great deal of practical wisdom and improvisational ingenuity to the game.
The appointment of Zaheer and Rahul Dravid as specialist batting coach for overseas Tests indicates that the Cricket Advisory Committee and the BCCI are looking at away assignments after ruling the roost at home. Over the two-year tenure of the new coaching team, India travel to places like South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia culminating in the 2019 World Cup in the United Kingdom. It augurs well for the team’s prospects that they have on board two of India’s finest performers away from home.
Zaheer’s Delhi Daredevils bowling coach and mentor at MRF Pace Foundation, TA Sekhar claims he had realised the left-arm pacer’s leadership and mentoring skills long ago: “I remember even in those days he used to come to the Pace Foundation for training, he used to mentor and give advice to the young trainees there. Dennis (Lillee) used to say in jest that one day he could be my successor here.” Maybe, he wasn’t jesting, after all.
At a time when India’s fast bowling resources are richer than ever, they have someone who can steer them to new heights.

Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun gives injury scare to England’s Jonny Bairstow in the nets at Lord’s

Sachin Tendulkar
’s son Arjun gave an injury scare to England wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow ahead of the first Test against South Africa at Lord’s. Arjun, who is 17-years old, was bowling during England’s practice session ahead of the series opener. The left-arm seamer’s first delivery was a yorker, which ended up being a toe-crusher for Bairstow. The wicketkeeper was pinned on the foot, according to a report by Daily Mail.
Bairstow was taken out of the nets after facing only one delivery from the youngster. There is, however, no danger reported as the 27-year old was provided with immediate first-aid, with his foot being placed in a compression unit. He was relieved of pain and there was no threat to his participation at Lord’s.
Arjun has appeared for the Mumbai Under-14 and 16 teams. The all-rounder’s father Sachin owns a property near the historic venue and this is not the first time he has rolled his arm over to the English batsmen.
England take on South Africa on Thursday at Lord’s. England would be led by Joe Root, who took on captaincy from Alastair Cook earlier this year while Dean Elgar will lead South Africa in the absence of Faf du Plessis. This will be the first of the four-Test series, which was preceded by a three-T20I series and three ODIs. England won the T20 rubber and ODI series 2-1. It remains to be seen whether Arjun bowling to English batters will become a usual affair.

Aamir Khan’s Dangal breaks these 10 worldwide box office records as it creates Rs 2000-crore club

The success of Aamir Khan’s Dangal goes beyond the box office. As the film breaks all records and enters Rs 2000 crore club, having earned a large part of its mind-boggling profits in China. As the film continues to go strong, here are the 10 records the film shattered on its path to glory…

* Dangal is the fifth highest-grossing non-English movie in history after The Mermaid, The Untouchables, Monster Hunt, Your Name
* Dangal is Disney’s fourth biggest hit of 2016 after Hollywood blockbusters Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Beauty And The Beast
* The highest-grossing live action sports movie of 2017
* The biggest non-Hollywood import ever released in China
* First and only Indian film with an overseas gross exceeding $100 million
* First and only Indian film with an overseas gross exceeding Rs. 1,000 crore
* First and only Indian film to gross over $150 million in a single territory (China)
* Biggest single-film payday ever for an Indian actor (Aamir Khan)
* Leggiest film in China’s history (83x opening day gross, and counting)
* Most consecutive days in China with a ¥10 million ($1.5 million) gross (38 days)

So what explains Dangal’s success in China? Indianexpress.com, in an earlier article, tried to understand the reasons why Dangal is such a huge success in China and came up with these obvious reasons: “Both China and India are deeply patriarchal societies, with a clear preference for the male child. China’s sex ratio of 121 males per 100 females (2004 census) is much worse than that of Haryana (114 males per 100 females, 2011 census)… So, when the young Chinese, especially the girls, see Geeta Phogat on the podium after a long, hard-fought battle against the prejudiced social norms, they see a bit of themselves in her and recognise the hardships their parents have experienced in the process.”
In the same way, the respect family commands in both the countries as well as the tough competition for scarce resources and opportunities is an everyday fact in both India and China.

We played like we had nothing to lose, now we are champions, says Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed after beating India

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said that the team played like they had nothing to lose and came out on top. Pakistan won their maiden ICC Champions Trophy title by beating arch-rivals India in the final by 180 runs. “We played like we had nothing to lose, now we are champions,” said Sarfraz.
Pakistan had started the tournament on a dismal note, losing to India by 124 runs. “After the India [group] match I said to my boys, the tournament is not finished yet. We played very well and now we have won the final,” said Sarfraz. On the day, Pakistan set India a target of 339 to win.
Their total was largely powered by a strong opening 128-run partnership between openers Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman. Azhar was dismissed after making a half century but Fakhar Zaman went on to make his maiden ODI 100. “He’s a great impact player,” said Sarfraz on Fakhar, “In his first ICC event, he played like a champion, he can be a great player for Pakistan.”
But it was the bowlers that took Pakistan home. Despite the strong total that they made, the might of the Indian batting line-up meant that Pakistan needed a good start early on to stand a chance. Mohammad Amir gave them just that dismissing Rohit Sharma in the first over even before India got off the mark. He then went on to dismiss Kohli for just 5 runs and took the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan. The Indian top three were hence back in the hut before the end of the 10th over. “All credit goes to my bowlers, Amir, Hasan Ali, Shadab (Khan), Junaid (Khan), (Mohammad) Hafeez, they bowled really well,” said Sarfraz.
Pakistan went on to dismiss India for 158, thus winning by 180 runs. “It’s a young team, credit goes to my boys, this tournament can be a great booster for us,” said that Pakistan captain, “It’s a very proud moment for me and my country, and thanks to the nation for supporting us.”

ICC Champions Trophy 2017 Final: Pakistan media applauds title win over India

Pakistan broke their dismal run in ICC events against India in a convincing manner on Sunday by winning the Champions Trophy at The Oval in London by a staggering 180 runs. Prior to this, Pakistan were 2-13 against India as per win-loss records in ICC events with their last win going back eight years in the Champions Trophy too. With the win, Pakistan won their first Champions Trophy to add to their 1992 World Cup and 2009 World T20 wins. And expectedly so, Pakistani media hailed this win by splashing the heroic effort on the front pages.
Batting first after Virat Kohli won the toss, Pakistan recorded a second straight 100-plus opening stand between Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali to get a strong start. With the foundation built, Pakistan didn’t give up on the momentum to score a massive 339 for India to chase and defend their title. However, India didn’t get their usual bright start with Rohit Sharma gone for a duck. Wickets started to follow easily right behind with the team left in tatters at 54/5. Things improved courtesy Hardik Pandya’s 76 but a mixup between him and Ravindra Jadeja was the final nail in the coffin before India collapsed to 158.

The Dawn went with a headline of ‘Pakistan break jinx, trounce India in dream final’ as their front page lead story. They went on to applaud the work of inexperienced Fakhar Zaman for delivering a 114 run knock in just his fourth ODI match. He had made his debut against South Africa earlier in the tournament and has gone strength-to-strength. With the ball, they appreciated the efforts of Mohammad Amir who picked up three wickets.

Express Tribune ran with multiple stories on the front page celebrating the win. Their headline read, “History Created – All Hail the champs” with a slug line of “Immaculate Pakistan decimate India to lift ICC Champions Trophy”. Their substories talked of how India awoke the sleeping giant, Pakistan’s celebrations after the title win and the classic win had the pundits celebrating too.

With an image of the Pakistan team carrying the trophy, The International News’ headline read “Pakistan crush Indian team, lift Champions Trophy” with the slug reading, “Pakistanis erupt in joy as they celebrate country’s most famous 50-over win in 25 years”. There were further stories on Virat Kohli’s press conference later and celebrations by the Pakistani players.

Pakistan Observer, which began publishing in 1988, in their unique style lauded the champions. Their headline read, “Pakistan Legendary Champions”. They carried quotes by PM Nawaz Sharif, Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb as they congratulated the team.

India to take on Pakistan in ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final on Sunday

It will be India against arch-rivals Pakistan once again in the ICC Champions Trophy. It is only the second time that the two teams are meeting in the final of an ICC tournament. While India were one of the favourites to reach this stage of the tournament and more, Pakistan have defied expectations by being one of the two teams left standing in England.
India and Pakistan had played each other in the final of the 2007 ICC World T20. It was a match that turned out to be one of the many classic encounters that the two sides have had across formats. India batted first and made a total of 157 for Pakistan to chase. Their total was powered by a 54 ball 75 from Gautam Gambhir and a lower order surge led by a young Rohit Sharma.

The hero of the match, though, turned out to be pacers
Irfan Pathan and Joginder Sharma. Pakistan kept the scoreboard ticking but also kept losing wickets. RP Singh and Irfan Pathan ended with three wickets apiece. MS Dhoni then tossed the ball to Joginder Sharma for the last over of the match in which Pakistan needed 13 to win. The pacer repaid the faith laid on him by his skipper as he took the wicket of Misbah-ul-Haq off the third ball and India won the inaugural World T20I title.
In the 2017 Champions Trophy group match, though, it was a far more uneven contest. India batted first in a rain-affected match that gave them just 48 overs to bat from. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawana and later Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh ensured that they made the most of it and made a total of 320 for Pakistan to chase. It was further curtailed to 289 off 41 overs due to further rains. They ended up falling 124 runs short of that target. But Pakistan have since recovered well, recording victories against South Africa, Sri Lanka and England. The latter was a statement of intent as they blew away England who were one of the tournament favourites.

Spanish state prosecutor accuses Cristiano Ronaldo of tax fraud

A Spanish state prosecutor accused Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo of defrauding Spain’s tax office of 14.7 million euros ($16.5 million) in unpaid taxes on Tuesday.
In a statement, Madrid’s regional state prosecutor accused Ronaldo of four accounts of tax fraud from 2011-14.
It said the Portugal forward “took advantage of a business structure created in 2010 to hide from fiscal authorities income generated in Spain from image rights.”
The statement said Ronaldo used what the prosecutor deems a shell company in the Virgin Islands to “create a screen in order to hide his total income from Spain’s Tax Office.”
The prosecutor also said that Ronaldo “intentionally” did not declare income of 28.4 million euros ($31.8 million) made from the cession of image rights from 2015-20 to another company located in Spain.
Additionally, the prosecutor accused Ronaldo of declaring 11.5 million euros ($12.8 million) earned from 2011-14 in a tax return filed in 2014, when the prosecutor said Ronaldo’s real income during that period was almost 43 million euros ($48 million). It added that Ronaldo falsely claimed the income as coming from real estate, which “greatly” reduced his tax rate.
It will now be up to a judge to decide if there are grounds to take the matter to court.
Ronaldo’s agency Gestifute had previously said he was up to date on his taxes, and it defended him again on Tuesday by saying that he had maintained the same financial planning in Spain that he had while playing for Manchester United before joining Madrid in 2009.
“There is no off shore structure for evading taxes,” Gestifute said in a statement. “There has never been concealment, or the slightest intention to conceal.”
Last month, tax officials said Ronaldo adjusted his tax declarations and paid an extra 6 million euros ($6.7 million) in 2014.
A four-time Ballon d’Or winner, the 32-year-old Ronaldo is Europe’s leading soccer player. He has led Madrid to back-to-back Champions League titles and its first Spanish league in five seasons, and helped Portugal to win last year’s European Championship.
He is also the latest high-profile soccer player to run afoul of Spain’s tax man.
Last year, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, were found guilty on three counts of defrauding tax authorities of 4.1 million euros ($4.6 million) from income made from image rights and given 21-month jail sentences. Neither Messi, however, is expected to serve prison time since it was a first offense.
On Tuesday, the state prosecutor cited the verdict against Messi as precedent for the case against Ronaldo.
Messi and his father were first accused by a state prosecutor of tax fraud in June 2013. Their case was resolved against them in July 2016.

India face Kyrgyzstan litmus test in AFC Asian Cup Qualifier

When India walk out to play Kyrgyzstan in Bengaluru on Tuesday for their second qualifier for the AFC Asian Cup, they will be seen as favourites to win the match. Kyrgzstan are placed 132 on the FIFA rankings while India are 32 places above them on 100. Moreover the Indian team have won all of their last five matches they have played home and away. Kyrgyzstan, on the other hand, have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five fixtures.
Kyrgyzstan is a relatively young team. Formed after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kyrgyzstan played their first official match away at fellow former Soviet country Uzbekistan in the Central Asia Tournament. Kyrgyzstan have been a regular in the Nehru Cup since the past few years and it was there that India first played Kyrgyzstan. India won that match 3-0 thanks to goals from Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil Chettri and Abhishek Yadav. The two teams have played two times since then. While India won the second match, the third and the most recent one played in 2010 went Kyrgyzstan’s way.
India and Kyrgyzstan are both tied at three points in Group A of the qualifiers. While India had beaten Myanmar in the first round of matches, Kyrgyzstan defeated Macau. India have since played a friendly against Nepal while the match against Macau remains Kyrgyzstan’s only match before they travel to India. It wasn’t too long ago that India were ranked 166 on the FIFA rankings as opposed to Kyrgyzstan’s 108. Kyrgyzstan’s low ranking in comparison to India is also because of the fact that India have played far more matches than their opponents in 2016 and 2017. Hence, despite the gulf in rankings, India coach Stephen Constantine has said that Kyrgyzstan could well be favourites. “They are experienced and have quality through their team,” said Constantine, “They will be difficult to break down. We are a team on the up but it will be a big challenge.”

Parthiv Patel abused by troll, finds support in Irfan Pathan, Twitterati

Parthiv Patel may have not made it big on the international stage but he remains a much-loved figure among cricket fans. He played a major hand in Mumbai Indians’ run to a third Indian Premier League title. Other than this, he is an icon for the Gujarat Ranji team, leading them to the title in the previous season.
Social media is a platform of expressing views and thoughts publicly but some users certainly don’t use the technology in a positive way. Recently a similar incident happened on social media handle Twitter when wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel was abused without any reasons.
Patel on his Twitter account wrote, “Where can I watch live streaming of India game in hongkong?”
On this a user abused the left-hander and replied, “Cricbuzz pe score dekhle Bhai…Jo dekhna tha wo to tu Miss kar chuka h **.”
Where can I watch live streaming of India game in hongkong?
@parthiv9 Cricbuzz pe score dekhle Bhai...Jo dekhna tha wo to tu Miss kar chuka h BC
The Mumbai Indians player was still humble in his reply and suggested the user of not using and abrupt language for asking a simple question. Parthiv’s reply read, “BHAI Sidha Sawal pucha tha..usme gali dene ki kya jarurat thi?ghar pe bhi ese hi baat karte Ho aap?”
While Parthiv replied in the most decent manner he could have, fast bowler Irfan Pathan came into his support and wrote, “Trend hay gali dena ka #learntorespect.”
Later the user who used abusive language for Patel insisted that he didn’t realised that it was the tweet from his official account.
BHAI Sidha Sawal pucha tha..usme gali dene ki kya jarurat thi?ghar pe bhi ese hi baat karte Ho aap?
